Bergen Airport’s parking facility covers five floors and serves passengers with different parking needs, including rental car customers and long-term parkers.
To make it easier for drivers to find an available space, the airport needed a parking guidance system that could provide reliable occupancy information across the entire facility.
The challenge
With parking spread across five floors and different parking zones, drivers needed a clear way to see where spaces were available.
Without parking guidance, drivers could spend unnecessary time searching across the facility before finding a space. Bergen Airport therefore needed a solution that could detect occupancy across the parking areas and guide drivers towards available spaces.
The system also had to be installed in an operational airport parking facility and work with the existing infrastructure without disrupting daily operations.

The solution
Sensade, together with APCOA Norway as the parking solution provider, delivered a parking guidance system across all five floors of the Bergen Airport parking facility. The installation was carried out by Bravida Norge AS and integrated with the airport’s existing infrastructure.
A total of 750 wireless LoRaWAN sensors were installed to detect whether individual parking spaces are available or occupied. The occupancy data is transmitted through five gateways and used by 120 ceiling parking lamps to guide drivers towards available spaces.
The system covers different parking zones across the facility, including premium and long-term parking, providing drivers with clear guidance as they move through the car park.
The impact
Drivers at Bergen Airport can now use the parking guidance system to see where spaces are available as they move through the facility. This makes it easier to navigate the five floors and reduces the need to search individual rows for an available space.
By helping passengers find parking more efficiently, the system can also help them reach the terminal sooner. This gives passengers more time before departure, whether for check-in and security, visiting shops and restaurants or simply getting to the gate.
For the airport and parking operator, occupancy data also provides a clearer overview of how the parking facility is being used.
Designed for an operational airport
Installing a parking guidance system across five floors required the new technology to work alongside the airport’s existing infrastructure and daily operations.
By combining wireless sensors, gateways and ceiling parking lamps, the solution provides parking guidance across the facility without requiring drivers to use an app or other digital service. The system gives them information directly where it is needed – inside the car park.
The results
- Passengers guided directly to available spaces
- Reduced need to search for available parking
- Improved parking experience for passengers
- More time available in the terminal before departure
- Better overview of parking occupancy across the facility
