Trondheim Airport serves more than four million passengers a year. With a large number of travellers arriving by car, clear and reliable parking guidance is an important part of the journey.
The airport’s existing parking guidance system was no longer functioning as intended. Drivers had limited information about where spaces were available, while the operator lacked reliable data on how the parking facility was being used.
The challenge
Without reliable parking guidance, drivers arriving at Trondheim Airport had limited information about where available spaces could be found. This meant more time could be spent driving through the parking facility in search of a space, particularly during busy periods.
At the same time, APCOA Norway needed reliable occupancy data to understand how the facility was being used and to support the daily operation of the car park.
The challenge was therefore both to improve guidance for passengers and provide the operator with a reliable overview of parking occupancy.

The solution
APCOA Norway partnered with Sensade to replace the existing system with a new parking detection and guidance solution.
The initial installation covered 500 parking spaces across three floors. Each space was equipped with a wireless sensor, while ceiling parking lamps provide clear visual guidance to available spaces within the parking facility.
Sensade also provides APCOA Norway with real-time occupancy data. The data is used to update the airport’s existing entrance screens, allowing drivers to see where spaces are available before entering the parking garage.
The system is designed for demanding weather conditions and operates at temperatures as low as -30 °C without the need for calibration or manual intervention.
The impact
Drivers now receive information about available parking spaces when they arrive at the facility and are guided towards available spaces inside the parking garage. This makes it easier to find a space and reduces the need to drive around the facility searching for one.
For APCOA Norway, the system provides continuous occupancy data and a clear overview of how the parking facility is being used. This supports the day-to-day operation of the facility and provides a better data basis for managing parking capacity.
For passengers, less time spent searching for parking means more time available in the terminal before departure – whether that time is spent in shops and restaurants or simply getting to the gate with less rush.
Expanded from 500 to 1,500 spaces
Approximately one year after the initial installation, APCOA Norway expanded the solution with an additional 1,000 sensors and parking lamps.
The expansion brought the installation to a total of 1,500 sensors and 142 ceiling parking lamps across the facility, extending the same parking detection and guidance system to significantly more spaces.
The results
- Guidance to available parking spaces
- Reduced need to search for available spaces
- Real-time occupancy data for APCOA Norway
- More time in terminal shops and restaurants
- Existing entrance screens updated with parking availability
