Lemvig is a coastal town in western Jutland where parking demand varies considerably throughout the year. During the summer months, the town attracts large numbers of tourists alongside its regular residents and visitors, increasing pressure on parking in the town centre.
Without continuous parking data, the municipality had limited insight into how demand varied between locations, days and seasons. Sensade therefore deployed a parking solution across the town centre, giving the municipality a detailed picture of how its parking areas are used and providing drivers with up-to-date information on available spaces.
The challenge
Like many towns with seasonal tourism, Lemvig experiences significant variations in parking demand throughout the year. During the summer months in particular, residents, visitors and tourists compete for the same parking spaces, putting additional pressure on the town centre.
Without reliable data on how individual parking areas were being used, it was difficult for the municipality to identify where demand was highest, where capacity was underused and how parking patterns changed between weekdays, weekends and seasons.
Drivers also had limited information about where spaces were available, resulting in unnecessary traffic from vehicles searching for parking.
It is estimated that search traffic in Lemvig accounts for more than 450 tonnes of CO₂ emissions, 120,000 hours of driving and more than 3 million kilometres of unnecessary travel each year.

The solution
Sensade installed 754 wireless parking sensors across 19 parking areas in Lemvig town centre. The sensors continuously register whether individual spaces are available or occupied and transmit the data through an IoT network supported by two gateways.
Together, the sensors generate approximately 55,000 data points every day, giving Lemvig Municipality a detailed and continuously updated picture of parking demand across the town centre.
IoT infrastructure
The installation also established an IoT network that can support applications beyond parking. The infrastructure provides Lemvig Municipality with connectivity that can potentially be used for other data-driven projects and Smart City applications in the future.
Parking analytics
Lemvig Municipality’s Technical and Environmental Department has access to Sensade’s platform, where parking data from across the town centre is collected and visualised.
The data makes it possible to analyse how demand varies between parking areas and over time, identify periods of high and low occupancy and assess whether existing parking capacity matches demand. This gives the municipality a stronger data basis for future changes to parking regulations, capacity and urban planning.
Driver guidance
The same parking data is also used to provide drivers with up-to-date information about available spaces across Lemvig’s 19 parking areas.
Through the parking app, drivers can see where parking is available before reaching a parking area, making it easier to find a space and reducing the need to drive around the town centre searching for parking.
The results
- Continuous parking data across 19 parking areas
- Better data for parking and urban planning
- Up-to-date parking availability for drivers
- Reduced need for drivers to search for parking
- IoT infrastructure supporting future Smart City applications
