Glostrup Town Hall is home to a range of municipal services and receives visitors throughout the day. For many people visiting the town hall, being able to park nearby is an important part of their visit.
Following changes to parking near the local train station, the town hall car park increasingly came under pressure from commuters using it for long-stay parking. Glostrup Municipality therefore needed a better way to manage the available capacity and provide visitors with information about available spaces before entering the car park.
The challenge
Parking pressure around Glostrup Town Hall increased after parking capacity near the local train station was reduced as part of a redevelopment. More commuters began using the town hall car park for long-stay parking, reducing the number of spaces available to people visiting the town hall.
The layout created an additional challenge. Drivers could not see whether spaces were available before entering the car park. If it was full, they had to continue approximately half a kilometre before they could turn around and look for parking elsewhere.
Glostrup Municipality therefore needed a solution that could improve guidance for drivers while providing better information about how the car park was being used.
The solution
Sensade installed parking sensors across the town hall car park, including time-restricted and accessible parking spaces. The sensors continuously register whether each space is available or occupied, providing real-time occupancy data across the facility.
The data is displayed on digital parking signs at both entrances to the car park. This allows drivers to see whether spaces are available before turning in and helps them avoid entering the car park unnecessarily when it is full.
Clear guidance for different parking needs
The guidance system distinguishes between different types of parking spaces, showing availability for standard, time-restricted and accessible parking spaces separately. Drivers therefore receive more precise information about the type of parking available before entering the car park.
The municipality has also adjusted the parking restrictions to reduce long-stay commuter parking. The digital signs can be updated remotely when parking rules change, without requiring physical alterations to the signs.
What the data shows
Occupancy data shows a clear relationship between the use of the car park and the town hall’s opening hours. From Monday to Wednesday, occupancy increases sharply from around 9:00 and remains highest during the late morning and early afternoon before falling again. On Thursday, higher occupancy continues later into the afternoon, while Friday sees an earlier decline.
This pattern corresponds closely with the town hall’s opening hours. Occupancy is significantly lower outside these periods and remains low at weekends, when the town hall is closed.
The data therefore gives Glostrup Municipality a clearer picture of when demand is highest and how the car park is being used throughout the week. It also provides a baseline for evaluating future changes to parking restrictions and capacity.
The results
- Real-time availability shown at both car park entrances
- Separate guidance for standard and accessible parking spaces
- Remote updates to parking information and restrictions
- Continuous occupancy data for parking management and planning
